Derwent World Patents Index: 2025 updates that redefine precision in patent analysis

The world of innovation thrives on precision, and when it comes to patent data, Derwent World Patents Index™ (DWPI™) remains the world’s most comprehensive database of enhanced patent documents. The latest annual revision to the DWPI manual coding system for 2025 is now complete. Our internal editorial teams are already utilizing it to code records appearing in the database from 2025 forward.

In this blog, we’ll discuss this year’s updates in more detail and explain how they enhance the usability of DWPI for researchers, analysts and innovators worldwide.

Why manual coding matters

DWPI’s manual coding system stands apart by providing structured and consistent tagging of novel technical aspects and applications for patents. Covering over 60 patent-issuing authorities and meticulously applied by our expert editorial teams, these codes help users:

  • Improve search precision and recall: Easily locate the most relevant patents without wading through irrelevant results.
  • Enhance analysis: Streamline insights and comparisons across vast result sets.

This year’s revision demonstrates our continued commitment to keeping our coverage and codes at the forefront of technological developments and user needs.

What’s new in 2025?

For 2025, the code structure has undergone significant updates to reflect technological advancements and user feedback. A total of 136 changes have been made, including the addition of 41 new codes, and enhancements to titles, scope notes and search terms for existing codes.

Here are the highlights:

Expanding coverage for emerging technologies

  • Nucleic-acid-drug conjugates: New codes have been added for oligonucleotide and polynucleotide-drug conjugates, which are now classified under B04-Q04A/C04-Q04A and B04-Q04B/C04-Q04B, respectively.
  • Targeted protein degradation (PROTACs): Updated to include proteolysis targeting chimera, covered under B04-Q05 and C04-Q05.
  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists: Reflecting the growing interest in this class of peptide hormones, these are now classified under B14-D01E3.

Artificial intelligence revolution in focus

Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform industries, and DWPI now includes detailed coding for AI technologies and applications:

Core AI technologies:

  • Speech processing (T01-J16C3A)
  • Computer vision (T01-J16C3B)
  • Large language models (T01-J16C3C)
  • Predictive analytics and probabilistic reasoning (T01-J16C5)
  • Distributed AI (T01-J16D)
  • AI-driven human-computer interfaces (T01-J16E)

AI applications across industries:

  • Agriculture, industrial automation, education, business optimization, healthcare, energy, transportation and more (T01-J16P series).

Other notable additions

  • Military strategy and planning: New code W07-X09 provides deeper granularity for this domain.
  • Telecommunications protocol enhancements: Hybrid protocol (W01-A06F4) and protocol timer codes (W01-A06F6) enrich telecommunications research capabilities.

Why these updates matter
