Open research and open access
Supporting open research initiatives with trusted intelligence, data and tools
Unlocking the potential of open science together
At Clarivate, we support the goals of open research because we believe it’s the best way to join the dots and make the process of scientific discovery faster, more robust and more transparent.
We know that navigating the transition to open research is important to our customers, and we endeavor to help them make that transition as seamless as possible with the tools and intelligence they need.
The academic community needs access to trustworthy research regardless of publishing model. They want to know that they can read the full text of an article when they click on it and that they can access the underlying data. And they want to know that the funding is trackable and transparent.
When the article is easily accessible and shareable, the dots are easier to join, the connections are explicit, and collaborations are more natural and meaningful. The process of scientific discovery is faster, and it is easier to ensure research integrity and reproducibility.

Investing in open science and the open community
Funding
In 2017 we provided a generous grant to non-profit Impactstory/Our Research to support further oaDOI development, helping make OA content more accessible for researchers.
Partnership
As a founding sponsor of ORCID in 2010/11, we donated the code from ResearcherID to accelerate development of a new persistent digital identifier backed by a non-profit organization.
Thought leadership
We use our data and expertise to help shed light on a complicated and quickly moving research landscape. Read our ISI Global Research Report on Plan S.
Intelligence, data and tools to support your initiatives
As the open science movement continues to grow, we are enhancing the visibility and discoverability of open outputs and integrating open identifiers.
Links to OA versions
In 2017, Web of Science was the first citation database to embed Unpaywall data from Our Research, making it easy for users to access peer-reviewed OA content.
Efficient preprint discovery
The Preprint Citation Index™ can be used as a single portal to search preprints alongside journals, books, proceedings and datasets – streamlining the research process and helping researchers make important connections faster
Open data discovery
Through the Data Citation Index™, we make open research data more discoverable and help researchers and funders track the impact of their data.
Community-led open identifiers
Web of Science Core Collection includes Research Organization Registry (ROR) identifiers to help users capture papers with variant affiliation names for the same organization in a search.
We provide universities, publishers, and government agencies with solutions that support the transition to an increasingly open environment.
Streamlined OA analyses for libraries
We provide trusted data and metrics that enable reliable, repeatable analyses of OA publishing at the individual and institutional levels. Librarians rely on our data to make informed decisions around OA funding for their researchers.
OA intelligence for publishers
Journal Citation Reports provides a suite of journal-level indicators and visualizations related to OA output and impact, helping publishers confidently adjust models throughout their portfolio.
Greater transparency in peer review
Openness helps preserve trust in peer review. The Web of Science points users to articles that have been reviewed using open, transparent processes and facilitates access to reviewer commentaries.
We help researchers confidently build on millions of OA articles from rigorously selected sources and locate reliable OA journals for manuscript submission.
Curated OA data
Our data is the best combination of robust article-level OA data and editorial curation. Other citation databases that display OA status lack stringent selection criteria for content. Web of Science remains the only publisher-neutral citation database that comprehensively covers editorially controlled OA.
Transparent journal selection
Our unbiased, in-house experts evaluate OA journals against a set of time-tested quality criteria and provide the community with the list of selected titles via the freely accessible Master Journal List.
Open indicator integrations
Our Master Journal List displays the OA credentials of participating journals using TOP Factor, which is based on the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines.
