英語論文の執筆において、機械翻訳や生成AIを使って英文を作成したり、英文をブラッシュアップしたりすることが増えてきたでしょう。学生の方々への英語論文執筆に関する指導においても、機械翻訳を使いこなすためのポイントを伝える機会が増えてきました。しかし、このような時代においても、英文の可否を判断し、英文を整えて仕上げるのは、やはり人である著者の仕事となります。日本語と英語は言語間の距離が遠いことから、例えば名詞の単数形と複数形の選択や冠詞の選択、文構造が日本語に似ないように、英文として自然に読めるように仕上げるための表現の選択は、著者に委ねられています。加えて、既存の機械翻訳ツールでは、複数の文同士や段落内での関係性が考慮されず、文単位での翻訳結果が出力されるのが通例です。そこで、出力結果から文同士の結束性を高め、時には文同士をつないだり、情報の順序を入れかえたりすることが必要になることが少なくありません。
そこで、英語ライティング力を向上し、全体として自然な英文を書くことができることを目指しましょう。ここでは、英語論文の冒頭に記載されるアブストラクトについて、Web of Scienceを活用し、自然な英文でアブストラクトを執筆する方法をご紹介します。まず、Web of Scienceで検索したアブストラクトから、真似したい英文アブストラクトの表現を探します。良い表現が見つかれば、それを自身の研究内容に置きかえて英作してみましょう。
今回はsmart farming（スマート農業）をキーワードとして検索し、高被引用文献の中から、年代の新しいものを抽出しました。また、インパクトファクターが付与されたジャーナルに掲載されている論文を選びました。
・タイトル

このように、英語論文アブストラクトの各文について、雛形として真似できる表現がないかを確認し、雛形が抽出できれば、様々な技術分野の内容に自在に当てはめて練習することがおすすめです。そのような練習によって、英文ライティングのスキルを身に付けることができます。さらには、主語や文頭に配置する句の工夫によって、先行する文章との結束性を高めます。そうすることで、最小限の接続語（However,など）を使用しながら、流れよく情報を提供することができるようになります。
