EndNote 2025 introduces new tools to improve the research and writing process, helping researchers tackle time-consuming tasks and achieve their research goals faster. This release marks the debut of AI-powered features within EndNote, with even more enhancements to come later this year.
Faced with the pressure to publish, a complex research environment to navigate, and growing administrative demands, researchers need tools that help them maximize efficiency without sacrificing integrity. A recent survey of researchers worldwide found that although 72% are interested in using AI tools to assist with manuscript preparation tasks such as self-checks for grammar and quality and populating citations, nearly two-thirds report that a lack of confidence prevents them from using AI to the extent they would like.
For over 30 years, researchers have relied on EndNote to streamline the research and writing process. The launch of EndNote 2025 introduces new advancements in reference management, including advanced AI features, that handle more administrative tasks so that researchers can focus on their ideas. EndNote 2025 enables users to continue to save time and stay organized throughout all stages of the research and writing process with a trusted tool that supports quality and accuracy.
AI tools in EndNote 2025
At launch, EndNote 2025 introduces two innovative AI tools developed according to our principles for responsible Academic AI development. The new Key Takeaway tool allows researchers to expedite the research discovery process by extracting key insights from individual papers. A short summary and a paragraph mentioning other topics addressed in the document displays to the user in the EndNote summary panel with one click. This information is extracted directly from the document without using any other document in the library or public LLMs, creating insights that users can trust.

In addition, EndNote 2025 brings the Find A Journal publishing tool available in the Web of Science Research Assistant to its users. This popular tool helps researchers identify the most suitable journals for their manuscripts. Available directly in the Cite While You Write plugin for EndNote, it uses key elements of a manuscript, such as title and abstract, to find the best-fit journals for publishing. Embedding the tool in the Cite While You Write experience means it is right where users need it most: the writing workflow.
AI holds great promise to transform the way research is conducted. As we continue to explore additional ways it can improve EndNote for users, we have also enhanced the product with other innovative technologies.
Enabling research efficiency and accuracy
One of the most anticipated new features of EndNote 2025 is the ability to cite directly from a PDF. With a click of a button, researchers can now quickly insert a highlighted quote and its corresponding citation into their document. This feature significantly streamlines the citation process, saving researchers valuable time and reducing the risk of citation errors. By introducing this functionality, EndNote 2025 enhances productivity and ensures more accurate referencing in academic writing.
EndNote 2025 also makes the Find Full-Text and Find Reference Updates tools more visible in the EndNote desktop panel to improve workflow and ease the process of updating references. Additional enhancements include a redesigned summary panel that allows users to configure which article details display in their library, and enhanced integrations with the Web of Science. By finding related records and citing articles from the Web of Science Core Collection for references in an EndNote library, users can quickly build a comprehensive knowledge base of reference material from trusted sources to serve as the foundation for their work.
The future of reference management
EndNote remains an indispensable tool for researchers looking to save time in the research and writing process. Later this year, we plan to release a second set of new features in EndNote 2025, including a generative AI research assistant that allows subscribers to ‘chat’ with full-text documents, and proactive notifications that alert users to updated reference and citation information. As we develop EndNote, we continue to focus on delivering responsibly designed solutions that enable researchers to push the boundaries of knowledge.
