On April 3, 2025, the in-person RPN Live event held at the Royal Society in London drew delegates from across the research sector. Sessions covered topics including research integrity, diverse research careers, how to drive economic growth across the country and how to demonstrate research’s societal impact.
Speakers including senior politicians and leading figures from funding agencies, higher education institutions and research organisations acknowledged that times were tough, but they also spoke up for the continued high standing of UK research and the importance of maximizing its value as a means to help weather difficult financial headwinds.
“I think the spring statement confirms that research and development is a very strong priority for government, and that it is a protected area,” said Jessica Corner, executive chair of Research England, opening the event. “There’s a very strong case for doing it but we should use those funds effectively in order to demonstrate that we can return on that commitment.”
